Choosing a top
- Sintered stone resists heat, stains and scratches, so it copes with hot mugs and keys. The Terry has a shiny white top on a gold stand, the Dex is a pair of tables on black iron stands, and the Bonny comes in 100cm or 140cm.
- Marble and cultured marble give the look of veined stone. Cultured marble is not scratch proof, so use coasters and felt pads. The white tops on the Pont and Troy side tables are cultured marble, in ready stock.
- Glass and wood: the Siu has a glass top on gold legs, the Coco a tempered glass top, and the Hue side table is wood with black iron.
Which size fits
As a guide, pick a coffee table about two thirds the length of your sofa: about 1.3m to 1.4m for a 2m to 2.2m 3-seater, like the Rejoy or Solin, and around 1m for a 2-seater. Leave about 40 to 45cm between the sofa and the table. Most coffee tables here are 35cm to 47cm high, about the height of a sofa seat or a little lower, and side tables run from about 50cm to 61cm, close to the height of most sofa arms. Round tables, like the 90cm MHF001 and the 1m Jodo, have no corners to knock into in a tight living room, and two-piece sets like the Mani, 80cm and 60cm across, give two heights to use together or apart. Made to order or ready stock
In ready stock: the Terry coffee and side tables, the FD and Jewel side tables, the Dex, the Mani side table set, the Tutu and the Hue. Most others are made to order and reach Singapore in about 6 to 8 weeks, the Tod in about 8 to 10. You can customise the top on the Pont, Jodo, Moda and Tarte, and the MHF001 tables take a white, black or brown top made to order. What size coffee table goes with a 3-seater sofa?
As a guide, about two thirds of the sofa's length: a 1.3m to 1.4m table for a 2m to 2.2m sofa, such as the 1.3m
Moda or the
Bonny in 140cm. Leave about 40 to 45cm between the two, so you can walk past and still reach the table.
Sintered stone or marble: which is better for a coffee table?
Sintered stone if you want a top that handles hot mugs and scratches. The
Jodo comes with either top, and its page notes that the sintered stone top is scratch proof and the cultured marble top is not. Marble if you want the veining and do not mind a little more care: wipe acidic spills like lemon or vinegar straight away.
Does Singapore's humidity affect a marble or wood table?
Natural marble is porous, so wipe spills straight away; cultured marble resists moisture but can mark under heat, so use coasters for hot drinks. Sintered stone and glass do not absorb moisture. Wipe wood, like the
Hue, dry after a spill and keep it out of strong direct sun.
Which coffee table suits a small HDB living room?
A round table, or a two-piece set you can split up. The 90cm
MHF001 and the 75cm
Siu are round, and the
Mani set, 80cm and 60cm across, can sit together in front of the sofa or apart. A 40cm side table like the
Tutu fits beside an armchair.
How tall should a side table be?
As a guide, about the height of your sofa arm, or a little lower. Ours run from about 50cm to 61cm: the
Tutu is 51.5cm high, the
Pont 55cm and the
Hue 61cm.
Can I customise the table top?
On some. The
Pont takes a white, black or customised top, the
Jodo a top colour on request, the
Moda a customised top, and the
Tarte a custom colour on its marble-print sintered stone. Customised orders are by pre-order and cannot be cancelled once confirmed.
