A sintered stone dining table that stands up to scratches, stains and heat, with rounded or square corners and a gold or black stand.
The base is two sculpted supports that twist up from the floor to meet the underside of the top, so it looks different from each side of the room. It is pictured with a white top veined in grey and gold. It suits a dining area where the table is the main piece, in an HDB flat or condo with plain walls and simple chairs.
Both supports sit well in from the ends, so you can put a chair at the head and foot as well as along the sides. The 1.6m size is 80cm wide, the narrowest of the three, which helps where the dining area is tight.
Rounded corners are gentler around small children and less prone to chipping.
A rough guide: about 60cm of table edge per person, and about 90cm between the table and the wall so chairs can pull out. The 1.6m table needs a dining area of about 3.4m by 2.6m to seat six comfortably; the 1.8m needs about 3.6m by 2.7m.
There are three worth knowing. The edges and corners can chip if hit hard by a pot or a chair back, because the material is very hard but not flexible; this is one reason to choose rounded corners. A chip can be filled, but the repair usually shows, and a cracked top generally has to be replaced rather than patched. It is also heavy, so check your lift and doorways, and lift the table rather than drag it. Against that, it does not stain, needs no sealing and handles heat, which is why a sintered stone dining table suits daily cooking and family meals. With the gold stand, try the Stella velvet chairs on a shiny gold stand, or the Tommy high back velvet chairs on stainless steel. With the black stand, the Hue leather chairs on black-coated iron keep the look plain and let the base stand out. See all dining chairs.
Sintered stone: wipe with a damp cloth and a little mild dish soap, then dry. It needs no sealing. Use a trivet for pots straight off the stove, avoid hard knocks on the edges, and lift the table rather than drag it. Wipe the stand with a soft dry cloth only; abrasive cleaners can scratch the electroplated finish.
Measure your lift and doorways before you order: a piece that cannot go up in the lift is carried up the stairs at an extra charge.
